As its name suggests synthetic diamonds look like real diamonds but do not have the same properties as real diamonds. The ability determine the differences between compusosition chemical, hardness, weight, and some characteristics of light, the manipulation of real diamonds and diamonds synthetic to the naked eye is extremely difficult. Man-made diamonds are not considered synthetic diamonds because they have the same properties as real or mined diamonds.

Cut Glass was probably the first material used to simulate a diamond. It is easily available, easy to cut and polish and when seen from afar, looks good. With all the information available to consumers today is trying to pass glass cut like a diamond rarely works. Cut glass is still seen in jewelry and in movies today because of its extremely cost weak. Using the crystal has been largely replaced by the more popular alternative to diamond, cubic zirconium.

Since 1976, the zirconium Cubic was the material most widely used for synthetic diamonds. Features Its low cost, durability and lightweight handling have made it extremely attractive in the production of jewelry at low prices. Zirconia light handling characteristics is so close to that of a diamond that only a trained eye can tell the difference between the two. The annual world production reached 50 million carats in 1980. zirconia will weigh about 1.7 times higher than diamond. The rate hardness cubic zirconium is between 8.5 and 9, whereas the diamonds have a hardness of 10.

Moissanite or silicon carbide was named after Henri Moissan after discovering new mineral in a meteorite fragments found near Diablo Canyon in Arizona 1893. Henri Moissan is also credited as being the first to have created a man-made diamond in a discharge in 1892. Moissanite is a mineral of natural origin which is slightly softer than diamonds with a hardness level of 9.25 but almost all other properties of a diamond extract. Charles and Colvard introduced gem-quality moissanite jewelry in 1998. The use of thermal conductivity test to distinguish diamonds from other artificial stone has been rendered useless because moissanite has almost the same thermal conductivity of diamond. It requires highly specialized equipment to determine if a stone is moissanite or diamond.

With the high quality of synthetic diamond on the market the only way you can be sure you have a real diamond is to certify and if you buy a diamond again insist on a certification before purchasing. He will tell you carat stone, its color and clarity, and its defects. If the seller is not willing to provide a certification with the diamond in May and then not telling the truth and you should find someone who will. After all when one wants to sell the diamond the new owner will want a certification from you. Here are some suggestions for the test to see if you're watching a real diamond or a synthetic before investing in a more conclusive test.

Using your diamond to cut glass to prove he is tough enough to do so you may prove that it is a diamond, but this type of abuse may damage any stone. It can ruin a song quite nice jewelry. Another frequently used to test the diamond is called the test light. Shine a black light through the gemstone in question. If a blue light when it shines the diamond could be real.

Careful clean up any oil and dirt from the diamond surface and then blow gently on the surface of the stone and your breath shows for a few seconds later you have a fake. Genuine diamond thin breath almost immediately.
